Generally regarded as Graham Parker's finest album, Squeezing Out Sparks is a masterful fusion of pub rock classicism, new wave pop, and pure vitriol that makes even his most conventional singer/songwriter numbers bristle with energy. Not only does Parker deliver his best, most consistent set of songs, but he offers more succinct hooks than before -- "Local Girls" and "Discovering Japan" are.   Forty years ago, Graham Parker and the Rumour released their fourth studio album, Squeezing Out Sparks, to critical and popular topped the Village Voice’s Pazz & Jop Critics’ Creem magazine’s Top Album Readers’ Poll for that year, it came in sixth. As recently as , in Rolling Stone’s list of Greatest Albums of All Time, Squeezing Out Sparks ranked th.

Editors’ Notes There are good reasons why Squeezing Out Sparks is widely considered Graham Parker's finest hour. For one thing, it was the leanest, meanest moment on record by Parker and The Rumour. Here they left behind the soul-slathered pub rock of their acclaimed early albums in favor of a stripped-down sound that had more in common with the new wave scene for which they'd helped lay .   And, by the end of the night, he was squeezing out sparks for the encores, whether on the Everly Brothers-evoking “That Moon Was Low” or the .

Parker and the Rumour put out a fifth album, The Up Escalator, but couldn’t capitalize on the momentum and acclaim they had generated with Squeezing Out Sparks. In other words, the band had some fame, some fortune, but not enough of either. As Belmont said, “If we were paid for being critically lauded, we’d be very rich people. Squeezing Out Sparks was not only Parker's finest moment, but it still stands up today as one of rock's best albums. When it was first released inArista simultaneously issued Live Sparks, a collection of live radiocasts that featured the same 10 songs in the same order plus the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" and Parker's kiss-off to his former label, "Mercury Poisoning."/5().

Squeezing Out Sparks is the high water mark of Parker's career for a variety of reasons: first, the Rumour had solidified into one of the best rock bands of the seventies, as comfortable playing reggae riffs as well as traditional rock and, of course, that spare, lean, "new wave" sound/5().

Throughout Squeezing Out Sparks, Graham spits out a litany of offenses that make him feel like an outsider, but he's not a liberal, he's a conservative. The record's two centerpieces -- "Passion Is No Ordinary Word" and the anti-abortion "You Can't Be Too Strong" -- indicate that his traditionalist musical tendencies are symptomatic of a larger conservative trend/5().

Squeezing Out Sparks was well-received by contemporary Christgau of The Village Voice called it "[a]n amazing record" in a "A+"-rated review for The Village Voice, adding that "Parker's mood, which has narrowed into existential rage with a circumstantial root, makes for perfect, untamable rock and roll." In Rolling Stone, Greil Marcus wrote that the album "is no landmark", but Genre: New wave.

Right from the start, Squeeze — made up of a couple of founding, a couple of longtime, and some more recent members — showed why they really haven’t lost a beat over the last 45 years, bringing their hugely popular songs with those oh-so-fun ear worm hooks to life with a performance that harkened back to the days where they ruled the New Wave neighborhood.

Squeezing Out Sparks is no landmark. If you’re looking for an LP with the coherence and weight of Bruce Springsteen’s Darkness on the Edge of Town, you may be disappointed. The album, rather, is one chapter in the story Graham Parker and the Rumour are telling—a tale sometimes subverted by weaknesses of nerve, imagination or craft, a tale of true fear and drama.
